Gong Ting Shou Puerh 2004
Gateless Gate contains everything we love about aged shou puerh. Flavors of cacao, roasted coffee, sweet dates and milk lift from a dark, rich, creamy body. The tea is earthy but very clean and smooth without any hints of excessive fermentation. Good fermentation and consistent aging have yielded the sweet jujube date flavors that we look for in aged shou, especially in later steepings. The Gong Ting or "Palace Grade" small leaves are loaded with flavor. The energy of Gateless Gate is wonderful- moving evenly throughout the whole body and gently uplifting. The tea is incredibly patient, and great for long tea session. We recommend brewing it gongfu with a small pot and small cups. Steepings should initially be very short (2-3 seconds) with water between 205-210 degreee Fahrenheit.
Gong Ting or imperial tribute teas are comprised of delicate smaller leaves and bud tips. Because the leaves are so delicate, the tea does not undergo the Wo Dui (piling, dampening, and turning the tea leaves in a manner much akin to composting) for the full two months or longer, which we see with other shou puerh. Instead, the time is halved. The result is a delicate Puerh with thin long needles and a particular flavor. "Gong ting" puerh is typically processed as mao cha (loose leaf) because the tippy, young leaves don't work as well pressed into cake form. However, we are referring to this cake as "gong ting" due to the significant presence of tippy leaves in the cakes and similarity in flavor and body.

Benefits of Puerh Tea
For thousands of years, Puerh has been the best multi-functional beverage you've never heard of.
Puerh tea contains the phyto-chemicals GABA and theanine, which have been attributed to lower stress levels. These phyto-chemicals increase the production of melatonin, which can aid in better sleep and a calmer demeanor throughout the day.
Thanks to the caffeine in Puerh tea, drinking a cup a day can help to increase your energy levels and focus. Every 8-ounce cup of Puerh contains about 60 to 70 milligrams of caffeine, and the naturally-occurring polyphenols in tea slow the release of caffeine in the body. (Read: No 2pm crash.) Compared to the 105 milligrams in a standard cup of coffee, this makes Puerh a good choice for people who find themselves too jittery after just one cup of coffee.
Puerh tea is high in antioxidants, vitamin C, and disease-fighting
catechins. Since Puerh is fermented, it has higher concentrations of these antioxidants than non-fermented teas, supporting your body's ability to maintain high levels of immunity and overall well-being.
Puerh contains high levels of polyphenols (flavonoids, catechins and theaflavin), which are not only known for their antioxidant activity, but their anti-inflammatory properties as well.
Healthy Gut Microbiome
Because Puerh is fermented, it contains probiotics that when consumed regularly, contribute to a balanced and robust gastrointestinal (GI) system. By regularly drinking Puerh tea, you can help maintain healthy flora throughout your digestive system.
