Rubedo

7572 is one of the defining recipes in shou puerh, first formulated in 1975 as one of the earliest blends built for the newly developed wodui fermentation process. Decades on, it remains the benchmark against which other shou puerh is measured, the reference point new drinkers are handed to understand what the style is supposed to taste like. This cake carries that recipe forward into something subtler and more refined than the standard.

Break the compressed leaf apart and the color inside tells a different story than most aged shou. This one pours copper, not the deep chocolate brown that shou puerh usually settles into with age, and that difference runs through the whole cup.

The fermentation here shows real restraint. Where many shou puerhs turn heavy and oily as they age, and where 7572 itself is often built for density and grip, this one stays clean, refined, and balanced, its sweetness resolving into soft wood and warm forest tones rather than the thick, syrupy weight the recipe can carry. A bright, dried fruit density lifts through the body, layered over light milky accents and a deep, rooty base. The finish is smooth and mellow, with barely any bitterness at all.

The leaf itself is dark and densely compressed, opening slowly and asking for patience through the early steeps. It could pass for a well aged sheng if you didn't know better. The qi matches the restraint in the cup and the deep qi of aged sheng. Yin, grounding energy settles the heart, opening the breath and quieting the body.
