Golden Needle

The Vault doesn't only hold rare and aged teas. Sometimes it holds a tea we simply love, made by hands we trust. Golden Needle earns its place here not because it's scarce, but because of the shape, the skill, and the people behind it. This tea arrived through friends who are master producers, and it felt right to include a truly excellent red tea in that spirit.

Grown in the mountains of Fengqing County, in Yunnan's Lincang Prefecture, this red tea is rolled into long, spindly golden needles, a shape rarely seen in tea and a mark of real skill in the crafting. Fengqing is considered the historic birthplace of Dian Hong, and the large leaf varietal grown there is what gives teas like this one their thick, downy buds and naturally sweet, malty character. Each leaf twists into a slender, unbroken thread, more delicate to look at than most red teas. Dry, the leaves carry a bright, fruity aroma, something like melon, that gives little hint of the malty depth in the cup.

Brewed, the liquor settles into a warm amber, bright rather than dark. The tea opens malty and understated at first, but subsequently reveals layers of cacao and molasses with a raisin sweetness in the finish. Underneath it all runs a soft, clean woodiness that's neither dry nor earthy, but gives Golden Needle real depth. The energy is easygoing and gently uplifting. Many red teas are strong enough to unsettle the stomach in a morning session, but this one is gentle on the body and endlessly patient, holding its flavor through many steepings.

This tea comes to us through a friend of Living Tea's, originally from Yunnan, who works closely with the small producer behind it throughout the year. She produces only five or six teas in total, mostly puerh, and we're honored to share her masterfully processed teas, including the September Puerh Club tea. These teas show the magic that happens when artisanal, small-batch production by a true tea lover meets good old-growth source material.
