Elder's Riddle

A small tuocha with a big story. This 1980s "mystery" puerh arrived to us without a confirmed factory or region. We only know its rough age, shape, and roughly forty years of quiet transformation to comes through in the brew. Unmarked, unwrappered teas like this are common among old loose material that's been broken from bulk lots over the decades; what it lacks in paperwork, it makes up for in character.

Each piece is compact, just 5–6 grams, brewing a deep, bright jujube-red liquor. Its small size makes it an easy tea to bring along, whether you're steeping at the office or on the go. The aroma is where the mystery deepens: aged and medicinal, with whispers of licorice root, fennel, and savory herbaceousness layered over a soft smokiness and a faint rice fragrance. On the palate it's clean and refined, almost delicate, with fresh butter and water chestnut notes and a long, sweet finish. It's a touch thin bodied compared to some of our denser shou, but there's something about its balance and clarity that makes it dangerously easy to keep drinking, cup after cup.

While we can't say for certain where this tea was made, its softness, sweetness, and creamy roundness feel closer in character to the gentler, earthier shou coming out of the Menghai region than to the bolder, more assertive styles typical elsewhere in Yunnan during this period. It's a subtle clue in an otherwise unmarked tea.

The qi is where this tea really distinguishes itself: balancing, uplifting, and clear. It leaves you calm, alert, and quietly happy, without heaviness. For those who love the ritual of aged puerh as much as the flavor, this is a tea to sit with, and a rare find: true 1980s shou puerh, still in circulation after more than forty years, is not easy to come by.
