Opus Minor

Alchemy calls it the Opus Minor, the lesser work: not the grand transmutation of lead into gold, but the smaller, patient labor that happens every day, in quieter hands. This tea belongs to that tradition. It doesn't ask to be a rarity. It asks to be brewed often, and to slowly, steadily transform in the cup the way real alchemy always has, through time, heat, and attention rather than spectacle.

Xiao Fa Tuo, "sold to France," is a Xiaguan Tea Factory recipe dating back to the mid 1970s, originally pressed for export through a Hong Kong trading house to the Chinatowns of France. This 2010 pressing is a small variation on that tradition, made with Menghai material blended with older leaf for deeper fermentation, rather than the Lincang material more typical of the line.

The transmutation begins in the cup itself. It opens earthy and moves toward mineral, more metal than brass, as if the tea is enacting its own small alchemical process: earth into metal, base into something finer. The fermentation is gentle and well handled, nothing muddied, nothing overdone. Clean wood carries through the session, like walking through an aspen grove on a late summer forest floor, with a slight anise note and a background of Chinese herbs and marcona almond. As the steeps continue, the tea softens and sweetens, drawing you further in, cup after cup. It's nourishing and hydrating rather than heavy, with good patience across steepings and a complexity that rewards a slower, more attentive session.

In Chinese medicine, the earth element governs digestion, the center, the quiet work of turning what we take in into what actually nourishes us. This tea sits in that same register. The qi is gently uplifting, easy and clear, settling into the belly rather than rushing to the head, a small, steady process of transformation happening right where digestion begins.

This isn't a Vault rarity, and it doesn't try to be. It's the lesser work, done well: honest, well aged shou puerh with real depth, made for daily practice rather than special occasion.
