Old Chest Reserve

The 7581 is one of the most iconic shou puerh recipes in existence, produced continuously since the late 1970s and long considered a benchmark for shou in brick form. The coarse, grade eight leaf that defines the recipe gives it a different character than a fine leaf cake, more earthy and robust, with a distinct texture in the mouth. This particular vintage, from Kunming Tea Factory and stored through the traditional, more humid method for decades, has developed the deep, medicine chest complexity that long, traditional storage produces: a little smoky, a little like an old Chinese herb shop, with notes of leather, antique wood, and dried date sweetness that balances its earthiness. The energy is settling and warming, dropping low into the belly and gently pulling downward, a tea for releasing whatever tension you've been carrying that you don't actually need to. 

We shared this tea in the Seasonal Tea Club for Autumn as well as during the Vessel Exhibitions in August. Folks loved it so much, we decided to include it in the vault. This is wonderful tea for the transition into Autumn to help settle the nervous system. For a lot of people, fully relaxing and settling is difficult, as we’re kept in low-grade activation by a constant hum of striving and rushing. Turning inward means beginning to let things settle: slowing the practice itself. Longer bowl tea sits. Longer meditations. A real letting go of pressure and unnecessary activity, rather than one more thing to optimize. This tea does exactly that. It carries an old timer's antique quality, tea for cultivating wisdom, slowness, longevity, and endurance rather than intensity. When we actually slow down, we see more clearly, and there is spaciousness in that clarity: room to get back in touch with what we value and how we're actually living. Old Chest Reserve’s earthy, yin depth draws us inward and help us transition.
