Before the 1990s, this is what Tie Guan Yin tasted like. Nong Xiang, meaning "strong fragrance," is the traditional, heavily roasted, more fully oxidized style that defined the tea for generations, before a wave of lighter, greener processing, known as Qing Xiang, took over the market chasing brighter aroma and fresher appeal. This tea is a return to that earlier way of making Tie Guan Yin: patient roasting over patient oxidation, depth over immediacy. This is Oolong at its best. 

We're including it in the Vault for the same reason we included Golden Needle: not for rarity, but because it's an extraordinary example of a traditional style, made with real skill. It's also, simply, a joy to drink. This tea is a full sensory journey, with each steeping distinct from the last as the tightly rolled balls slowly unfurl.

It opens clean, clear, and layered, closer to golden daylily than the roasted depth you might expect from Nong Xiang, with the traditional roast sitting in the background rather than announcing itself. By the third steeping, the tartness classic to Tie Guan Yin arrives, and the liquor deepens into a mid amber. By the fourth, that tartness resolves into a mineral sweetness, round and satisfying without ever going flat. It's a patient tea, unfolding steeping by steeping rather than all at once, and it rewards sitting with it through the full session.

The energy here is bright and warming, a small flash of sweetness suited to the colder months, when the body wants something to open the heart and mind. It's a tea for stimulating creativity and clarity in equal measure, precise and awakening rather than heavy. For anyone who loves oolong, this is a tea that reminds you why.
