Why Puerh?

Tea people always
end up here.

Puerh is the category serious tea drinkers inevitably find themselves drawn toward. It's where the depth lives. It changes with age. It carries the imprint of place, season, and time. It rewards attention in a way no other tea does.

At Living Tea, Puerh is our greatest passion and the heart of what we do. Founder Colin has spent decades exploring Puerh tea, traveling through Yunnan and building relationships with the farmers and collectors who specialize in it.

That depth of knowledge is what shapes every single selection we make for the club.

"The more time you spend with Puerh, the more it reveals. People don't just drink it — they build a relationship with it, which deepens with daily practice."

The Range

More variety than
any other tea. Full stop.

Sheng · Raw Puerh

Young, alive,
uplifting

Bright, grassy, gently bittersweet, sometimes herbaceous with honey notes. Sheng is energizing and clarifying — the tea of emergence, clear-headed focus, and the deep taste of the forest. With age and natural fermentation, Sheng Puerh becomes darker, more complex and loaded with grounding, pervasive energy.

Shou · Ripe Puerh

Deep, earthy,
grounding

Dark, rich, meditative. Shou Puerh carries a settled, earthy depth that slows you down and brings you fully into the moment with notes of dark chocolate, forest floor and red dates.

We carefully curate the ideal tea for each month — choosing Sheng or Shou Puerh from different harvest years, based on the season's energy and what will support your body and mind most.

Over time, you'll experience the full, extraordinary range of this extraordinary tea.

The Math

Exceptional quality.
Remarkable value.

~$2

Per session

We send around 70g of tea per month — enough for roughly 18 sessions. That works out to about $2 per session for the finest Puerh we can find anywhere.

7–10

Bowls per session

One of the most remarkable things about Puerh: the same leaves brew 7 to 10 bowls. This isn't one cup of tea. It's a full, unfolding practice.

100s

Teas sampled

We taste hundreds of teas throughout the year. We choose one. You get the best of what we found — without the searching, the guesswork, or the wasted money.

What You Get

We do the heavy lifting.

📅

Seasonally curated

Every selection is chosen in relationship with the season — what the body wants, what the moment calls for. Lighter, brighter and uplifting in summer. Grounding and darker in winter.

🔓

Inside access to the stash

Members get first access to Living Tea's rare, limited-quantity teas and wares before they're available to anyone else. Some of these never make it to the public site.

📖

Context, not just leaves

Each month includes guidance to help you understand what you're drinking — its character, its season, why it was chosen. You'll develop real fluency in Puerh, one cup at a time.

One more thing: When a club selection becomes a member favorite, we often keep extra stock after the month ends — so you can go back for more of the teas that moved you.

May's Puerh

Spring River

Menghai Tender Shoots Shou Puerh, Mid 1990's

A tea of quiet depth. Spring River is a loose ripe pu-erh from Menghai, Yunnan and crafted from tender shoots harvested in the 1990's. It carries that age with understated grace. The liquor is thick and oily, settling into the cup like a slow-moving river after rain. Notes of cream and warm milk rise from the steam, while the body evokes a muddied forest floor in late spring — earthy, soft, and alive with the kind of dampness and petrichor that follows an afternoon shower. A clean, smooth presence that's calming as the strong spring energies are rising.

April's Puerh

Threshold

Xiaguan Sheng Puerh, 2004

This is a tea that clears the head while anchoring the body. For April, that balance feels right: the season of emergence, of ground thawing and energy rising. This tea mirrors it.

Twenty years in, this brick has arrived at the threshold of aged puerh. It's the the precise moment when a sheng puerh crosses into aged territory without losing the clarity and lift that define a greener sheng puerh. It doesn't have the deep calm of an older sheng or the earthiness of a shou; it carries both worlds at once. That in-between quality is the sweet spot for lovers of aged sheng puerh.

March's Puerh

Mistwood

Chun Yun Aged Maojian Shou Puerh, 1990's

An aged 1990s Chun Yun Maojian shou puerh, this tea offers a quietly elegant expression of depth without heaviness. The liquor is smooth and clean, with notes of forest floor, damp earth, and wet fallen leaves, offering the scent of a humid grove after rain. I chose this tea because it reminded me of the first rains of spring, when winter is still loosening its grip and the landscape begins to breathe again.

Subtle, composed, and deeply comforting, it is a shou for those who appreciate maturity, restraint, and the gentle turning of the seasons.
