Describe your practice and/or why mindfulness is important to you.
I am an Icelandic-American singer-songwriter from San Diego, California. My music blends together a more traditional folk singer-songwriter sound with a contemporary beach vibe.
I start every morning and end every night with a 30-40 minute meditation. During my meditation I close my eyes while holding asana (a comfortable seated posture) and focus on staying as still as possible. I perform what is known as four fold breathing (In for 4, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4) and then focus intensely on a symbol or image in my minds eye. This practice is known as Dharana.
Mindfulness is extremely important to me, because it helps keep me grounded, think clearly, as well as keep me in a state of physical and mental relaxation, while still maintaining energy and focus throughout the day.
What is your highest value and why?
The value I hold closest is compassion. I believe that when looking at the world through a lens of compassion, it is much harder to judge, hate, and invalidate both our own human experiences and the experiences of others around us. If compassion was the only virtue we all collectively strived for I truly feel as though the world would be a much more loving and better place.
Describe one health practice that is non-negotiable for you each day
I practice Kundalini Yoga every day of the week, no exceptions. It not only deepens the effects of my daily meditations, but helps keep my body energized and strong.
Describe one tradition that you connect with regularly and why?
I regularly connect with old Icelandic traditions, I have always been very inspired by my Icelandic heritage and take time out of my week to study the Icelandic language, music, and its history. I am also a novice Mead Brewer and I follow a traditional viking recipe.
What's the most common method you use for tea preparation and what are you excited to learn more about?
The method of tea preparation I use most often is the Traditional Gong Fu method. I would love to try and use a side handle teapot, as well as learn more about the ancient and rich history of tea.
Describe one way that you support your community and what would help you to support others more effectively
