Chimaera - Aged Baozhong Oolong - Pinglin, Taiwan 1980 - 1 oz

Chimaera - Aged Baozhong Oolong - Pinglin, Taiwan 1980 - 1 oz

We had the great fortune to come across this aged Baozhong during our Spring 2019 trip to Taiwan. An old tea friend had a small quantity of this remarkable tea to share. With flavors of exotic flowers, fresh rose, an herbaceous green center and aftertaste of toasted rice, we find Chimaera more complex than other Baozhong Oolongs. The floral aroma has hints of dandelion root, and the Qi is heart-opening.

Baozhong means "wrapped kind," referring to the traditional paper packaging, which was done by hand with special folds and go glue. Typically grown at lower elevations between 600-800 meters, Baozhong is not rolled like most Taiwanese Oolong nor heavily oxidized. It is typically marketed to the West as a "green Oolong" (5-22% oxidation) from Taiwan, but actually originated in Fujian, China and brought to  Taiwan in the second half of the 1800's. The style then evolved further in Taiwan, similar to Tieguanyin and Fo Shou Oolongs. Because of the modern trend of minimal oxidation, it is extremely rare to find traditional Baozhong with stronger oxidation and roast. Hence, our excitement at discovering this remarkable tea.
