Ananda is frank, clean and penetrating with a nice structured bite, which is unexpected in a shou but very pleasant. The Qi is mildly yang, moving throughout the body and slightly uplifting. Previously, I didn't take much interest in Lao Cha Tous ("old tea head") because they are the remains of the puerh production process, which somehow equated to "lower quality" to me. I'd also only had one example, aged from the 80's, that I really enjoyed. UNTIL, I came across Ananda, which the producers refer to as "the essence of shou puerh." It is formed during the wet-piling process, where the tea leaves are stacked and fermented. The heat and weight of the pile causes some leaves to become tightly compressed and clump together, forming the nuggets.

The producers of this tea refer to it as "the essence of shou puerh" because a lot of tea juices concentrate during the pile fermentation to form the hard nuggets. The Chinese date sweetness that one looks for in shou puerh is strongly present, partially due to the concentration of juices, yielding a long lasting deep aftertaste. Finally, this is definitely the first Lao Cha Tou I've experienced that comes from ancient trees (200-400 years old). You can taste and feel the difference. For a lot of people, fully relaxing and settling is difficult, as we’re kept in low-grade activation by a constant hum of striving and rushing. Turning inward means beginning to let things settle: slowing the practice itself. Longer bowl tea sits. Longer meditations. A real letting go of pressure and unnecessary activity, rather than one more thing to optimize. This tea does exactly that. It carries an old timer's antique quality, tea for cultivating wisdom, slowness, longevity, and endurance rather than intensity. Only a small amount circulated independently as loose tea, later known as “Old Loose Tea.” Unpressed and freely traded, these leaves aged naturally under diverse conditions, developing complex, individual personalities. Its small size makes it an easy tea to bring along, whether you're steeping at the office or on the go. The aroma is where the mystery deepens: aged and medicinal, with whispers of licorice root, fennel, and savory herbaceousness layered over a soft smokiness and a faint rice fragrance. On the palate it's clean and refined, almost delicate, with fresh butter and water chestnut notes and a long, sweet finish. Gong ting, meaning palace or tribute grade, refers to the smallest leaf and bud material sorted out during processing, the same tender growth that would once have been set aside for imperial use. It's the most refined grade shou puerh comes in, but refinement alone doesn't make a good gong ting. What we look for is whether that small leaf still delivers real body and depth, since it's easy for a tea this delicate to end up thin or one note. This one doesn't.
